Health Insurance Cover Calculator

How much health cover do you actually need in your city, for your family size? Tier-aware estimator with medical inflation baked in.

What it means

Medical inflation in India runs at ~12% - double overall CPI. A ₹10L policy today will cover only ₹3L worth of hospitalisation in 10 years. This calculator factors in city tier, family size, age bands and inflation to suggest the right sum insured.

Sum insured Base × Age multiplier × Family multiplier
Metros (Tier 1) base: ₹10L. Age 45+: 1.5×. Each extra adult: +60%. Each child: +40%.

Worked example

Family of 4 in Mumbai, eldest 40: ~₹25L sum insured recommended today - rising to ₹77L in 10 years at 12% medical inflation.

Frequently asked questions

Is ₹5L enough for a metro family?

Rarely. A single ICU stay in a Tier-1 city can run ₹4–7L. Cardiac surgery ₹5–12L, cancer treatment ₹15–25L. A ₹10L base + ₹25L super top-up is a smarter budget.

Base policy + super top-up vs one big policy - which is cheaper?

Top-up almost always wins. A ₹5L base + ₹20L super top-up at ₹4L deductible typically costs 40–50% less than a single ₹25L policy, for effectively the same cover.

Should I rely on employer health cover?

No. Group cover ends with the job and often has low sum insured (₹3–5L). Always have a personal family floater, so you have continuity and no break between jobs.

Do I need maternity cover?

Only if you're actively planning a pregnancy. Waiting periods of 2–4 years apply, and claim limits are low (₹50K–₹1L). Budget it as a planned expense if you can.

What about senior parents - floater or separate?

Separate policies. Parents 60+ push floater premiums sharply; they need their own plan with enhanced senior-specific benefits (pre-existing disease cover, annual health check-ups).
